Art Institute of Chicago

Art Institute of Chicago

The second-largest museum in the United States boasts some of the world’s best-known art and stunning Lake Michigan views.

On the edge of Grant Park, with Michigan Avenue on one side and Lake Michigan on the other, stands this crown jewel of Chicago museums. Founded in 1879, it features a permanent collection of more than 300,000 works—including more French Impressionist paintings than anywhere else in the world after the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The museum’s 11 wings are organized according to geography, time period or medium. Highlights include its Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt collection, as well as works by Picasso, Matisse and Pollack. You could easily spend an entire day (or week) here. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) adjoins the museum, resulting in the largest school-museum campus in America. Notable SAIC alums include Georgia O’Keeffe, Claes Oldenburg, Grant Wood and David Sedaris. If you’ve got the stamina after trekking through the institute, check out nearby Grant Park. Nicknamed “Chicago’s Front Yard,” it contains some of the city’s top sites, including Buckingham Fountain, Spirit of Music Garden and the Museum Campus, home to the Adler Planetarium, Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium—plus Soldier Field.

Nearby

  • A half-mile west of the museum stands Willis Tower. Formerly known as Sears Tower (and still called that by locals), the striking black skyscraper is the second-tallest building in the United States. The views from its Skydeck are incomparable.
  • Millennium Park, home of “The Bean” and other iconic Chicago sculptures, is tucked into the northwestern corner of Grant Park, a stone’s throw from the institute.
