Venice Beach and Boardwalk

Venice Beach Los Angeles

Take in an endless parade of colorful bohemia at one of the best people-watching sites in the country.

Since its founding in 1905, Venice has cycled through multiple incarnations. It started as an American replica of the Italian city of the same name (complete with miles of canals and imported gondolas). After that it was known as a beachside resort town and the “Coney Island of the Pacific,” with an amusement pier, miniature railroad and high-flying aerial-trick-performing aviators. Visitors still stroll along some of the renovated historical canals, but it’s hard to beat Venice Beach and the two-mile Ocean Front Walk (also known as the Boardwalk) for their dizzying array of sensory delights and curiosities. From the gladiator types pumping iron at Muscle Beach to the artists hawking their wares to the street performers displaying their talents, the Boardwalk is a psychedelic swirl of humanity, entertainment, commerce and creativity.

Nearby

  • A few blocks from Venice Beach, Abbot Kinney Boulevard is an impossibly cool stretch of boutiques, galleries and eateries, populated by breezily beautiful people who look as if they stepped right out of a fashion spread.
  • A long-established but perennially cool Venice hot spot, CHAYA Venice is just a few steps off the Boardwalk and offers upscale casual Japanese fare, a cool bar scene and top-notch sushi.
  • A jaw-dropping example of the bohemian flair for which Venice is famous, the Mosaic Tile House is covered almost entirely in colorful, ornate tile. Full tours are available on weekends by appointment, but even a drive-by viewing is sure to be memorable.
