The Ultimate Travel Guide to Peru

Ancient history meets innovation in this South American jewel.

Peru is, in a word, extraordinary. How else to describe a country whose borders contain everything from iconic Incan ruins to Amazon jungle to epic beaches? Throw in Lima’s sophisticated mix of high-end cuisine and impressive cultural attractions and it all adds up to a South American adventure you’ll not soon forget.

travel tips

When to go

The dry season (May to September) is the best time to visit Machu Picchu and other areas in the Andes. Explore the coastal region, where Lima is located, in the warm, humid summer months (November to March). The lowlands to the east, meanwhile, tend to be hot and rainy year-round.

Public and private bus lines as well as regulated taxis serve Lima and other cities. The country’s privatized train system, PeruRail, serves many tourist areas, including Machu Picchu.

Insider tips

  • Peru is famous for its spiced hot cocoa. Pair the thick, chocolaty drink with panetón, a sweet bread commonly eaten during holidays.
  • Payment is often required when photographing Peru’s indigenous villages and the residents therein. Ask before you snap.
  • Haggling is common at Peruvian marketplaces.
